The most common of all the STD's in America, it is a bacterial infection (Chlamydia tracomatis) that spreads through sexual contact only. This disease is very
hard to detect in men, and when the symptoms appear, in about 2 weeks, consist
of penile discharge, burning sensation during urination, and occasional
swelling of the testicles. Treatment for this disease is usually
antibiotics.
Most people have never heard of Chlamydia, even though about 4 million people
contract the disease each year, which makes Chlamydia twice as common as
gonorrhea and 40 times as common as syphilis. If infected with the
disease, rough 20 percent of men and 80 percent of women never develop symptoms,
and if gone undetected can really cause serious complications later on down the
road. No wonder why it is referred to as the silent STD.
Lab test can be used to detect Chlamydia, however the method of choice is
swabbing the urethra for infected cells for testing. A relatively new
test, which examines the urine, has now been made available and it is a painless
solution from its former methods. However, having both test done, will
also rule out the possibility of having Gonorrhea as
well.
